ESEH / WHITE HORSE PRESS POSTER PRIZE 2025 – RUNNER-UP

We much enjoyed supporting the ESEH poster prize at the conference in Uppsala last month. Johannes Ellingsen’s striking poster, which was awarded second prize, impressed the judges with its vibrant colour scheme reflecting the subject and its integration of text into the design in just the right quantity for clarity and impact. A good poster should leave the viewer wanting to explore further, rather than trying to fit in every last piece of research; Johannes achieved this aim impressively.

The author explains a little more about the poster’s aim:

In recent decades there has been a resurgence in the practice of heath burning along the coast of Norway in an effort to conserve ecosystems and biodiversity, and mitigate risks of wildfire. As is common within other practices of prescribed burning today, this is a practice built on an ecological baseline of fire being the key factor in the shaping of a particular ecosystem for thousands of years. By examining heath burning through the interlocking of landscape, heritage and fire, the main aim of the poster is analysing how ecological baselines of fiery landscapes are formed, and how these baselines influence practices of prescribed burning. The poster also aims at creating a perspective on the resurgence of heath burning in Norway.
